When you're pitching your tent at night, running off-road at dusk or just looking for something in the loft, you can't beat the convenience of hands-free lighting provided by a led headlamp. LEDs are robust, energy-efficient and built to last. So, what makes a headlamp different? How do you know what to buy?
Flood: For general camp duties, close maintenance work and reading. Flood beams do not project light over long distances.
Spotlight: This tight beam is best for long distance viewing. In most cases it is a better choice for navigation in the dark.
Lumens are a measure of how much light your headlamp will produce. Headlamps offer a choice from 0.02 lumens to 1000+ lumens. When choosing the lumen output you need to consider the intensity and cd rating. In addition, LED colour is also a factor to consider. Neutral LEDs will allow your eyes to see your surroundings.
The basic purpose of a headlamp is to direct light to a target area. Headlamps are tested to determine how far (in metres) they can throw the available light. The headlamp beam distance will tell you how far you have to go (the surface you want to shine on).
Most headlamps, including batteries, weigh less than 7 ounces and are similar in size. Some come with a top strap and external battery pack, adding bulk. Such models are intended for specific needs (e.g. climbing) rather than regular adventures.
If a red LED is required, how many lumens are needed. Some headlamps have a low lumen red LED built in for when you don't want to disturb people around you. Check the red lumen output to ensure it meets your needs.
The headlights sold by Brightenlux are all able to withstand a certain amount of rain and snow. Some can withstand short periods of short-term immersion.
The ability to adjust the headlamp unit up and down is a good option. It allows you to position the light beam exactly where you want it. This is particularly handy when reading through headlamps.
If you are in the shop checking the headlights, try the button to see if you like the headlights cycling between their modes (from high to low and vice versa). In addition, some switches lock to prevent the headlamp from being turned on unintentionally while it is in the package.
Headlamps designed for use with lithium batteries are a good choice for cold weather use, as lithium batteries outperform alkaline batteries in cold conditions. Rechargeable nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries are also suitable for headlamps and perform well in cold conditions.
Some headlamps place the battery pack at the rear of the headband and lay a small cable between the battery pack and the headlamp. Brightenlux offers a top shoulder strap for added stability.
